Tiffany Windows at St. James New London

St. James Church has six large Tiffany windows among the many windows in the church. All of the Tiffany windows were installed between 1910 and 1911 and were funded by gifts from parishioner families.

Windows designed and manufactured by Louis Comfort Tiffany used larger pieces of glass, unique coloration processes and less leading than traditional styles of stained glass. Some of the shading is achieved by varying the thickness of the glass or by building up various colors of glass. The glass is translucent and light shines through the design, illuminating the picture like a color slide. Unlike ordinary stained glass, the picture in a Tiffany window is visible even though no light shines through, although the scene is quite different in character and appearance. More information about these windows can be seen by clicking here.

St. James has a docent ministry that works with the local Thames River Heritage Park to welcome guests from the American Heritage coastal tour boats that dock at the New London seaport. Buses from these boats bring tourists to St. James each year to see and hear about our windows and the other historical artifacts of our 300 year-old parish story.
